Top Tips to stay warm with a wood heater this Winter

As winter settles in across Australia, it’s the perfect time to ensure your wood heater is ready to keep your home warm, safe, and burning efficient. The Australian Home Heating Association has compiled essential tips to help you make the most of your wood heating this season.

Burn Smart, Burn Clean

Always use dry, seasoned firewood with a moisture content below 20%. Burning wet or green wood produces more smoke, increases creosote buildup in your flue, and reduces heating efficiency. Properly seasoned wood ensures a cleaner burn and better heat output.

Schedule Regular Maintenance

Before the cold sets in, have your wood heater and flue inspected and cleaned by a certified professional. Regular maintenance prevents creosote buildup which is a leading cause of chimney fires and ensures your heater operates at peak efficiency. The AHHA recommends servicing your unit at least once a year.

Check Seals and Vents

Inspect the door seals and air vents of your wood heater. Worn or damaged seals around the door and glass can allow additional air into the firebox causing the fire to burn quicker than intended and reduce the heater’s efficiency. Ensure air vents are clear to maintain proper airflow, which is crucial for optimal combustion and heat distribution.

Store Firewood Properly

Keep your firewood stacked off the ground in a dry, well-ventilated area, protected from rain and moisture. Proper storage prevents mould growth and ensures your wood remains dry and ready to burn. Avoid storing large quantities of firewood indoors, as it can introduce pests and moisture into your home.

Upgrade if Necessary

Upgrading to a modern, certified wood heater can provide better heat output and improved combustion efficiency from your wood while reducing smoke emissions. Check the compliance plate on the back of your heater for the Particulate Emissions Factor. If it’s greater than 1.5 g/kg then consider upgrading your heater. By choosing one of our AHHA member brands, you know you are buying a trusted brand that is compliant to Australian Standards.

By following these tips, you can enjoy a warm, and cosy winter with your wood heater. For more information in choosing the right heater, see here.
