Australia's Aboriginal people have lived in the
rugged, ancient landscape of the Northern Territory
for at least 40,000 years. Many scientists set
the date of their arrival far earlier; all agree
that the culture is one of the world's oldest.
From Australia's tropical Top End to the starkly
beautiful monolith of Uluru (Ayers Rock) at its
red centre, almost every geographical feature
is significant to local Aboriginal people.
Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory,
and enjoys a relaxed, tropical lifestyle as well
as containing some spectacular World Heritage
areas including Kakadu National Park. Darwin has
grown from an early and remote outpost to a thriving
modern capital city.
